Can you imagine a better way to celebrate Memorial Day than by taking a terrific Grand Canyon helicopter tour? The holiday falls on Monday, May 27, and plenty of folks will turn it into a 3-day weekend. Grand Canyon helicopter tours usually sell out pretty fast over weekend holidays. If you want to take one, book your seat as soon as you can.

You can catch a Grand Canyon helicopter tour in Las Vegas and Tusayan, AZ, which is near the gates at the South Rim. Tour hours are the same on holidays and they begin every hour. Flights out of Tusayan visit the South Rim, while Vegas flights head for Grand Canyon West (a/k/a the West Rim).

Either rim is a fantastic adventure.

Chopper Tours Of The South Rim Of The Grand Canyon

Tours to the South Rim can be aerial-only or landing tours. The two tours that are the most popular are the 30-minute and 50-minute air-only flights. Both of these air tours depart from the Grand Canyon National Park Airport at Tusayan. The 30-minute version flies from the South Rim to the North Rim and back. The 50-minute tour makes the same flight, but adds everything up to the eastern boundary of the National Park (even the fabulous Painted Desert!).

Two fantastic landing tours are also offered. One includes the 30-minute flight I mentioned above and adds a terrific Harley motorcycle ride through the National Park. Another one is a chopper tour and a 4x4 excursion to see the sunset on the edge of the canyon. If these options sound like fun, be sure to get your seats early so you don't miss out.

Grand Canyon Chopper Tours From Las Vegas

Choppers that fly from Vegas only go to the West Rim. However, if you are in Vegas and want to take a chopper tour of the South Rim, book a package that includes an airplane flight from Vegas to the South Rim along with the chopper tour.

At the West Rim, you have a choice between landing tours and air-only flights. The West Rim has an extra benefit in that it is the rim where choppers can descend to the canyon floor.

If you don't have much time to spend in the Grand Canyon, the air-only tours are fantastic. On the way to the canyon they pass over sights like Hoover Dam, Lake Mead and Grand Cliffs Wash. You will also see spectacular views of the canyon and the amazing glass Skywalk before your chopper turns back towards Vegas.

Landing flights are more comprehensive, and as such, they're my favorites. A great way to celebrate the holiday is to choose the landing tour that flies you down to the floor of the Grand Canyon where you can enjoy a champagne picnic. The trip down is a 3,500-foot descent and you'll picnic next to the Colorado River! A smooth-water rafting tour is a popular add-on for this flight.

You can also choose a landing flight that provides you with VIP access to the Glass Bridge. The Skywalk is made out of glass and is big enough to allow you to walk 70 beyond the edge of the rim. You will see stunning views, including the one you see below you to the bottom of the canyon 4000 feet below.

Wrapping Up

The holiday will be here before you know it. If you are going to be anywhere close, don't miss the opportunity to take a Grand Canyon chopper tour. Since this is the first holiday of the summer travel season, the seats will go quickly. Try to get your seats at least one week in advance. You should also book your tour and pay for it online so you can get the lowest price possible.
